There is a window every year — roughly the last week of April through mid-June — when New Jersey is at its most photogenic. The dogwoods bloom. The lawns are at peak green before the summer humidity dulls them. The light at four in the afternoon turns everything gold. If you have a milestone landing in this window, we genuinely hope you take advantage of it.
The case for an outdoor spring event
Spring events have a different quality than summer ones. The light is softer. The air is cool enough that guests are not constantly seeking shade. Florals are in their finest hour. And the photographs you walk away with have a luminous, painterly quality that simply does not exist in August.
Our favorite NJ venue types for spring
We tend to gravitate toward four kinds of settings for spring celebrations across New Jersey:
- Private backyards in Bergen and Essex counties. Mature trees, established gardens, and architectural homes give us so much to work with. A tented patio with bistro lights and an organic arch is hard to beat.
- Historic estates and country clubs. Places with stone walls, formal gardens, and original architecture lend themselves beautifully to the editorial style we love.
- Restored barns and farms. For a more relaxed event, NJ has some genuinely beautiful working farms that host private celebrations.
- Rooftop or terrace venues in Hoboken and Jersey City. Spring is when the skyline view actually feels enjoyable rather than overwhelming.
Florals that suit the season
We lean into what is naturally in season — garden roses, ranunculus, sweet peas, lilacs, peonies (briefly), and trailing greenery. Forcing tropical flowers into a spring NJ palette never feels right. Soft cream, blush, sage, and a touch of dusty rose photograph beautifully against new green foliage.
Weather contingencies
Spring in NJ is gorgeous and unpredictable. Every outdoor event we plan has a written rain plan — not just a vague "we will figure it out." Usually that means a sailcloth tent on standby, or a clearly designated indoor pivot space at the venue. We make the call by Wednesday morning of the event week, so you are never frantically deciding on Saturday.
What to skip in spring
Heavy, dark color palettes. They photograph beautifully in fall, but in May light they read as somber. We also gently steer clients away from very late afternoon ceremonies (5pm) in early spring because the light is fading by 6:30 — and that is exactly when you want guests sitting down to dinner.
